Basil The Royal Plant
Scientific Name: Ocimum basilicum.
Useful Parts: leaves and stem.
Everyone knows what an extraordinary aroma it has and most of us have it in our garden or inside our home. It’s very easy to grow and its uses and properties are endless. On the other hand, few know the basil benefits for, stress, insomnia and headaches and fewer know that can repel flies.
Basil essential oil has many uses too and is not only beneficial for our health, but also for our sense of taste. Now basil is mostly used in our kitchen because is very tasty when is combined with certain foods, like fish, vegetables even garlic. In France is considered “royal plant”, in Italy the symbol of love and in India a gift for protection. For the origin of the word probably has a Greek root because ‘βασιλίας’ means king in Greek. Ancient Greeks use its aroma inside their castles and for food. Furthermore, in the early Hindu traditions, was a symbol of god and holiness. There is also a myth that says “when basil attracts you with its great aroma you will start having bad characteristics of a scorpion”.
To grow basil start by cuttings about 1-2 inches, seeds take much longer and put it in water then move in soil and keep it moist. Also, move outside only at warm weather more than 10 degrees Celsius. Place it in a sunny spot to get at least 6 hours of sunlight. This herb doesn’t require any fertilizer.

How to prepare: 1 tbsp. of dry leaves or 2 3 fresh leaves in a cup. Let the leaves for 10 minutes in hot water and then drink the tea. 1 tbsp of honey is optional for a cough. Drink 1-2 cups per day.
Side effects: overused dose may cause loss of concertation and sleepiness.
Other uses: science proved that it can fight early stages of cancer because it contains phytochemicals and the antioxidant activity increases. Additionally, when we smash fresh leaves they can absorb the poison of wasp, bee and scorpion. In India is used for antiseptic. For pregnant women, it can produce more or create more milk. When we have basil, home can repel the flies and mosquitos and have a fresh odour. Basil oi have antibacterial properties that can provide protection against bacteria so it can fight antibiotic-resistant infections.
